Lithuanian dentists, who were the first ones to start carrying out private practice out of all medical professions, were well aware that the joint regulation of their activities and the activities of other medical professions was not suitable in order to provide patients with high quality oral health care services. Following the experience of foreign countries, where the activities of dentists are regulated by their own self-governing institutions, an initiative group of Lithuanian dentists had been making every effort to enable the establishment of the Lithuanian Dental Chamber – the first professional medical self-governing institution.
