Lithuanian dentists, who were the first ones to start carrying out private practice out of all medical professions, were well aware that the joint regulation of their activities and the activities of other medical professions was not suitable in order to provide patients with high quality oral health care services. Following the experience of foreign countries, where the activities of dentists are regulated by their own self-governing institutions, an initiative group of Lithuanian dentists had been making every effort to enable the establishment of the Lithuanian Dental Chamber – the first professional medical self-governing institution.
- On 11 October 2001, the draft law of the Lithuanian Dental Chamber was registered in Seimas;
- On 18 December 2003, Law No. IX-1929 on the Lithuanian Dental Chamber was approved (Official Gazette, 2004, No. 4-35);
- On 9 June 2004, the first general meeting of members of the Lithuanian Dental Chamber was held, during which the Council of the Dental Chamber, the Disciplinary Council and the Audit Commission were elected. Main documents of the Chamber were approved: Chamber Statute, Professional Code of Ethics for Dental Professionals;
- On 1 July 2004, the Lithuanian Dental Chamber was registered in the Register of Legal Entities of the Republic of Lithuania.
